Law Society Demands Probe into Lawyer Tom Imbukwa’s Death After Assault

The Law Society of Kenya has demanded an investigation into the death of advocate Tom Ouya Imbukwa following a reported assault.
In a statement issued on April 23, LSK expressed being “deeply saddened and troubled” by Imbukwa’s death from injuries sustained during what they called a violent attack.
“It has been reported that Counsel Imbukwa was discovered after being attacked and subsequently died,” the Society stated, mentioning he had been admitted to the intensive care unit at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The Society expressed concern over claims that Imbukwa had received threats from a police officer weeks prior and had lived in fear.
“These claims require verification through official investigations,” LSK noted.
They also highlighted disturbing preliminary findings, including injuries “suggesting possible torture,” and raised questions about inconsistencies at the scene.
“This inconsistency raises serious concerns and underscores the necessity for thorough, transparent, and independent inquiries.”
LSK connected the death to a wider pattern of security issues affecting legal professionals, warning that “any assault on a lawyer is… an assault on the judicial system.”
The Society requested the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the National Police Service to conduct “swift, fair, and complete investigations.”
LSK President Charles Kanjama indicated that the Society would provide legal support to the family and ensure an independent autopsy.
“The Society will persist until the truth is uncovered and justice is served,” the statement declared.
Legal professionals have been asked to wear purple ribbons this week in remembrance and unity as demands for justice grow.
