The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced a new set of tenders for infrastructure improvements across various airports in the nation, with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) included in the multi-billion initiative.
On Tuesday, June 2, the authority published a tender notice for the planned extension of the Musa Gate access road at JKIA, calling for qualified companies to submit their proposals.
The JKIA initiative is part of a broader collection of airport development projects announced by the agency, encompassing facilities in Eldoret, Kisumu, Malindi, Mandera, Mombasa and Boma.
The initiatives encompass road infrastructure, telecommunications enhancements, fuel services, cargo handling facilities, and power generation systems.
The project designated as Phase 2 centers on enhancing and expanding road connections to the airport, which has recently faced strain due to increasing cargo and passenger volumes.
Additional projects promoted by KAA involve establishing and managing a pack house at Eldoret International Airport, supplying Jet A1 fuel services at Kisumu International Airport, installing an environmentally friendly diesel generator at Mandera Airstrip, and constructing a fuel service station and retail outlets at Boma Airstrip.
The agency has also re-issued the tender for left luggage services at Moi International Airport and the enhancement of the Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PABX) communication system at Eldoret International Airport.
The expansion of the gate access road at JKIA coincides with government disclosures of plans to expand the airport through a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.
In March, authorities revealed that the airport expansion would commence in June, following the initiation of the global bidding procedure.
According to the ministry, the JKIA expansion will follow a 20-year master plan extending to 2045.
The master plan includes capital expenditure and financial feasibility assessments.
The airport’s expansion will be carried out in two stages, intended to boost capacity while modernizing amenities and enhancing the passenger journey.
