Drivers utilizing the Nairobi Expressway have gained temporary reprieve as Moja Expressway Company announced toll fee exemptions amid significant flooding impacting the Mombasa Road.
The private operator disclosed on Friday, May 1, that flooding along the Mombasa-bound route caused substantial traffic congestion for vehicles traveling from Mlolongo to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
The flooding, linked to persistent heavy rainfall, has disrupted normal traffic flow, prompting authorities to implement immediate measures to address the crisis.
To reduce the flooding’s impact on drivers, the company implemented measures for vehicles exiting via the Southern Bypass and the Eastern Bypass (Exit A).
“Due to extensive water accumulation along the A8 section, traffic congestion has developed for vehicles traveling from Mlolongo to the city center,” Moja Expressway stated.
“In alignment with our dedication to public service and social responsibility, Moja Expressway will temporarily suspend toll charges for vehicles departing through the Southern Bypass and the Eastern Bypass,” the company added.
According to the company, the fee exemption will continue until the affected sections are completely restored and traffic conditions normalize.
The private operator clarified that drivers can still access the Expressway through any inbound entry point from Mlolongo to the city.
“Drivers with transportation requirements may access the Expressway through any inbound entry point from Mlolongo to the city. To qualify for the toll exemption, vehicles must exit via the Southern Bypass or Eastern Bypass Exit A,” the operator stated.
Motorists have been advised to adhere to traffic guidance and exercise caution during this period, while the government maintains close monitoring of the situation.
The expressway operator reaffirmed its commitment to public service and assured drivers that updates will be provided as conditions change.
“We kindly request all drivers to follow traffic guidance and exercise caution at this time. Moja Expressway will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as needed,” the company affirmed.
Meanwhile, the decision follows ongoing heavy rains causing extensive damage across Nairobi and surrounding areas, resulting in flooding and traffic disruptions.
