Ingotse Boys High School in Kakamega County was indefinitely closed following a student riot during the night of Wednesday, May 20.
Preliminary reports indicate that students damaged property on the school grounds before many left the campus during the middle of the night.
Evidence obtained showed significant damage to key school infrastructure, including the complete destruction of the library.
Consequently, school authorities announced the facility’s closure on Thursday, May 21, requiring all students to depart immediately.
The reason students specifically targeted the library, which was completely destroyed, remains unclear, especially considering its flammable contents.
The scene showed the building completely gutted, with the roof, windows, and doors damaged in the fire.
Smoke remained visible in parts of the campus by Thursday morning, suggesting the fire took several hours to fully control.

Just days earlier on May 13, over 1,100 students at Kaumoni Boys’ High School in Makueni County were indefinitely sent home after they rioted and damaged property of unspecified value at the institution.
Makueni Sub-County Director of Education Richard Ng’ang’a confirmed the incident, noting that students burned the offices of the principal, deputy principal, secretary, and bursar. They also broke windows in all classroom blocks and damaged laboratory pipes and chemicals.
Separately, on May 12, parents of students at State House Girls in Nairobi were instructed to collect their children as the school addressed numerous complaints from the students.
