The Government, represented by spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, has assured families impacted by the Utumishi Girls Academy fire that it will fulfill all pledges to support victims and their families, covering all medical and funeral costs.
In a June 6, 2026 statement, Mwaura confirmed that the National Government, in collaboration with County authorities, remains dedicated to honoring all commitments to affected families, contradicting reports to the contrary.

Following the tragedy that resulted in 16 students and one parent losing their lives while several others sustained injuries, the Government has implemented multiple measures. This includes arranging for the transfer of injured students from St. Joseph Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized care. The State has also pledged to cover all medical expenses at both healthcare facilities.

Additionally, the Government announced each bereaved family will receive KSh 200,000 in aid. This support extends to the family of the parent who died while en route to the school upon learning about the fire incident.
Mwaura further indicated that the Government will bear all funeral expenses, including mortuary fees, coffins, transportation of the deceased, and costs for a requiem mass scheduled at Utumishi Girls Academy, with the date to be determined.
Authorities have provided updates on burial arrangements for 15 of the 16 student victims, confirming plans for a requiem mass at Utumishi Girls Academy, with the timing yet to be announced.
The body of Zuhura Rama, one of the deceased students, has been released to her family and transported to Kwale County for burial according to Islamic traditions.
Mwaura emphasized that the Government’s primary focus is supporting grieving families, aiding recovery of the injured, ensuring respectful final arrangements for victims, and continuing assistance to those affected during this mourning period.
