Kenyans can now enjoy the upcoming FIFA World Cup following the government’s decision to fund its broadcast on the national television channel.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi confirmed that funding difficulties that jeopardized Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s (KBC) plans to televise the international football event have been overcome.

The Cabinet Secretary reported that he had consultations with the KBC Managing Director and verified that the required financial backing had been secured.

“The World Cup begins in just a few days, and we eagerly anticipate this major football spectacle,” Mbadi stated.

“I acknowledge we faced obstacles in supporting KBC’s broadcast, but we have now overcome these.”

The comments will likely bring comfort to football enthusiasts nationwide who had worried about potential limitations in accessing the tournament.

Mbadi mentioned that the administration had already provided financial resources for the broadcast despite the country’s current budget limitations.

“I did speak with the Managing Director, and she has certain initiatives in progress. We have already approved funding from the central government to support the transmission,” he explained.

“There was a delay, certainly due to the challenges we are currently experiencing, but I am certain that Kenyans will have the chance to watch and enjoy the World Cup.”

The expanded FIFA World Cup is anticipated to capture worldwide interest, uniting some of the planet’s top football clubs and players in a month-long championship.

The event is scheduled to take place between June 11 and July 19, 2026.

Co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament will include a record 48 teams.

The competition is considered one of the most notable occasions on the international football schedule and is projected to attract substantial television viewership globally.

“To be honest, I’m undecided about which team to support. At present, I don’t have a favorite,” he remarked.

The Treasury’s assurance aligns with the government’s initiatives to preserve public access to major sports events via the national broadcaster.

KBC has historically collaborated with governmental entities and rights owners to guarantee that significant international sports competitions are available to Kenyan viewers, especially those without access to subscription television services.
