The Forum for Republican Democracy–Asili (FORD–Asili) has cautioned that Kenya faces a critical juncture, pointing to worsening economic conditions, mounting political intolerance, and deteriorating governance standards.
In a statement signed by Secretary General Njeru Kathangu, the party appealed for moderation among citizens and leaders, warning against heightening tensions.
“When a nation reaches such a crossroads on multiple fronts… we must pause for reflection and include voices of reason in the national conversation,” the statement indicates.
“Let us come together in dialogue! Be silent and recall that this nation belongs to neither you nor me exclusively, but to all of us collectively.”
The party condemned the escalating cost of living, asserting that Kenyans face difficulties fulfilling essential necessities due to increasing fuel costs and tax burdens.
“We were already economically struggling before the unfavorable fuel price hikes; the cost of living has reached unprecedented levels,” Kathangu stated.
“Kenyans can no longer afford basic necessities… they have seized control of resources and continue to deplete our nation of its sovereignty.”
FORD–Asili also flagged what it described as diminishing democratic space, citing growing intolerance and political violence.
“There seems to be a gradual effort to establish a single-party state in this country as intolerance and violence become more prevalent,” the document observes.
“Regrettably, our president has resorted to verbal attacks, insults, and confrontations with the opposition.”
The party additionally cautioned against political realignments that might undermine diversity, claiming opposition factions were being coerced to align with the ruling coalition.
“Political parties are being enticed and compelled to follow the ruling party’s agenda, merge with it, or dissolve into it, steering the nation toward a one-party governance system,” it declared.
Regarding social matters, FORD-Asili emphasized the persistent occurrence of gender-based violence, including femicide, characterizing it as disturbing evidence of a weakened social structure.
“Women in this country continue experiencing violence at alarming rates… while attempts to implement the two-thirds gender principle remain unfulfilled and suppressed,” the statement noted.
The party concluded by demanding immediate national dialogue to confront the nation’s problems and restore confidence.
“Our societal framework is significantly damaged and requires urgent attention. The sole path to national reconstruction is our collective agreement that Kenya requires such dialogue to rebuild confidence and trust,” Kathangu emphasized.
FORD-Asili now advocates for a national conference to facilitate what they termed “a sincere and patriotic dialogue” focused on reuniting the country, ensuring economic stability, and strengthening democratic governance.
