The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) conducted their second wellness medical camp in Nairobi, focusing on enabling media professionals to evaluate their health conditions early and encourage preventive health measures in the workplace.
The program, originally conceived by SJAK members two years prior, has been executed in collaboration with Holistic and LifeCare Hospital, representing its second consecutive event following an initial implementation.
Hezekiah Omondi, Business Development Manager at LifeCare Hospitals–Mmolongo, explained that the partnership demonstrates the challenging environment of journalism and the necessity for regular health examinations.
“Joining forces with SJAK is valuable since journalists operate under stringent time constraints and significant stress. Providing them with preventive healthcare resources safeguards those who inform the public. Well journalists contribute to a robust media sector,” Omondi stated.
LifeCare Nursing Manager Mary Waweru described the various health screenings available during the camp.
“Today we conducted Random Blood Sugar tests, Blood Pressure measurements, prostate cancer examinations, breast cancer screenings, and dental assessments,” she mentioned. “Being aware of your health condition is crucial because issues like blood sugar levels and blood pressure often remain asymptomatic, and the primary goal is to facilitate early medical intervention.”

Holistic representative William Deche mentioned that their institution utilized the InBody composition analyzer to evaluate journalists’ physical condition, along with mental health evaluations.
“We are assisting sports reporters comprehend their body composition, which plays a vital role in managing weight and lifestyle factors,” Deche observed, noting that psychological counseling sessions were also organized to assess mental wellbeing among SJAK members.
SJAK reiterated its dedication to maintaining the initiative, identifying health as a fundamental concern for its membership.
“The wellbeing of our members remains essential. While this is just the second event, additional programs will be organized as we aim for every journalist to flourish both professionally and personally,” the association emphasized.
National Olympic Committee of Kenya Deputy President Barnaba Korir praised the undertaking, highlighting its broader significance beyond journalism.
“This wellness camp represents an excellent program that we have also implemented for our athletes. If the approach benefits athletes, it can certainly enhance the lives of journalists as well,” Korir affirmed.
