KDF Strengthens Security and Community Engagement in Lamu County
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are strengthening security and deepening community engagement in Lamu County as part of a comprehensive strategy to counter the threat of Al-Shabaab militants. The military has intensified patrols and established new forward operating bases in vulnerable areas along the coastline and in the Boni Forest to deny the terrorists freedom of movement. This enhanced security presence aims to preempt attacks and protect critical infrastructure.
Alongside the kinetic operations, the KDF is conducting robust Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities to win the trust and support of the local population. These initiatives include medical outreach camps offering free healthcare, veterinary services for livestock, and the rehabilitation of schools and water points. The hearts and minds campaign is designed to address local grievances and counter extremist propaganda by demonstrating the tangible benefits of state presence.
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the dual approach, noting an improvement in security and a better relationship with the security forces. The KDF has reiterated its commitment to this long-term partnership, emphasizing that community cooperation is the most effective weapon in the fight against terrorism. The integrated strategy in Lamu is viewed as a model for stabilizing regions affected by insurgency.
