Community Initiatives Promote Mental Health Awareness

by KenyaPolls

Across Kenya, a variety of community-led initiatives are gaining momentum to raise mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and expand access to psychosocial support. Mental 360, a youth-led nonprofit, operates wellness clubs in schools and community centers, offering peer-led support, group therapy, and mental health education. Their Boma Wellness Platform, a digital tool, further increases access by providing resources and support via mobile phones.
Faith-based organizations are also deeply involved. Compassion International Kenya has launched a Church‑Led Initiative on Mental Health and Drug Use in 69 churches across counties like Nairobi, Kilifi, Siaya, Kisumu, and Nakuru The project trains young peer mentors within congregations to lead mental health discussions, create support systems, and encourage healthy coping among youth exposed to drug abuse and emotional challenges.
Another notable actor is PMWC‑KE (Promoting Mental Wellness in Communities – Kenya), a grassroots organization that uses community outreach, workshops, sports, and creative arts to engage youth, parents, and marginalized groups in conversations about mental health. They train lay counselors and mobilize safe spaces in schools and communities for psychosocial support.
In areas affected by conflict or trauma, Peace Work Kenya integrates mental wellness into its peacebuilding programs. Their community-based approach includes trauma healing workshops, group therapy, and psychological first-aid training to help individuals and communities heal and build resilience.
