President William Ruto has announced plans to upgrade airports in Western Kenya and construct a 300-kilometer highway connecting Mau Summit in Nakuru to Malaba in Busia.

Speaking on May 16, the President stated that the government is advancing major infrastructure initiatives in Western, Rift Valley, and Nyanza regions to enhance transportation links nationwide.

He revealed that authorities have commenced plans to modernize Matulo Airstrip in Bungoma County, instructing the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to begin facility improvements.

The President, addressing Bungoma religious leaders at State House in Nairobi, mentioned extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft.

“Regarding Matulo airport, I previously requested your governor to allocate land, and I’ve directed KAA to extend the runway and build a terminal building,” Ruto explained.

The President indicated that the terminal construction will be finished by December this year, with additional land to be acquired for further runway extension.

“Soon we will be able to land smoothly at Matulo airport in Bungoma,” he assured the religious leaders.

During the gathering, the President also confirmed that Kakamega airport is currently being upgraded and is 70 percent complete.

He additionally revealed that authorities have secured funding for a feasibility study on the Mau Summit-Malaba highway project, which will enhance connectivity along the Northern Corridor.

Ruto stated he plans to commence construction of the Ksh130 billion Mau Summit-Malaba highway in April 2026, when he returns to formally open the Ksh250 billion Rironi-Mau Summit highway.

“The Rironi to Mau Summit road will be finished by April. Thousands of Kenyans from Nyanza, Western, and Rift Valley have faced difficulties on this highway, frequently experiencing delays,” Ruto said.

He added that the Naivasha to Nakuru section will be expanded into a six-lane road.

“Hopefully, when I return in April to open the Rironi-Mau Summit highway, I will also initiate construction of the Mau Summit-Malaba highway,” he reiterated.
