The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has offered assistance to educational institutions impacted by the catastrophic landslides that affected Chesongoch and neighboring regions in Elgeyo Marakwet County, delivering crucial resources to maintain educational continuity and support affected students.
The support package comprises 6,950 kilograms of foodstuffs, 800 books, 1,000 Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)-certified instructional materials, and feminine hygiene products for female students.
Addressing attendees at the donation ceremony, CAK Director General David Kemei stated that the assistance seeks to alleviate challenges facing educational institutions and learners impacted by the calamity while preserving uninterrupted educational activities.
The landslides, which took place in November 2025, resulted in fatalities, family displacements, and educational disruptions across multiple locations, namely Chesongoch, Embobut-Embolot, Sambirir, and Kibendo. Numerous residents found themselves without shelter and requiring immediate humanitarian support.
With ongoing recovery initiatives, authorities have launched a resettlement program for impacted families. Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich reported that substantial advancements have already been achieved in reconstructing housing for those affected.
Nine months ago, we tragically lost our fellow citizens in Chesongoch, Embobut-Embolot, Sambirir and Kibendo due to mudslides. Currently, reconstruction and resettlement activities are progressing. The two impacted households in Kibendo have already relocated to their new residences, while the construction of 53 dwellings in Chesongoch has reached different phases of completion,” stated the governor.
Governor Rotich further indicated that the resettlement initiative will be expanded to include Sambirir and Embobut as local and national authorities collaborate to restore normalcy within the impacted communities.
He praised CAK for its prompt response, emphasizing that the contribution would enable students in the affected regions to continue their education despite the difficulties created by the disaster.
The contribution is projected to benefit hundreds of students and bolster current recovery efforts focused on reconstructing livelihoods and enhancing community resilience following the landslides.
