One person has been killed by gunfire and more than 50 individuals detained during the second day of protests against the planned Ebola quarantine center in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.
Demonstrations commenced early Tuesday near Laikipia Air Base, where residents intended to hold peaceful gatherings and submit a petition calling for the facility’s relocation. However, authorities prevented protesters from reaching the site, resulting in confrontations that persisted throughout the day.
Commercial operations in Nanyuki town were halted, multiple schools remained shut, and streets were blocked as demonstrators set up barricades and engaged in clashes with security personnel. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds.
Local residents condemn what they describe as disproportionate force by authorities and vow to maintain their resistance until the facility is moved, citing worries about its location near residential areas, educational institutions, and the town’s central district.
The contentious Ebola quarantine project continues to face legal proceedings despite a High Court directive that suspended its implementation while awaiting additional information from the government.
