The Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, has confirmed the government’s continued support for Kenya’s sevens rugby team, Shujaa, as they aim for excellence on the international stage. Mwangi, who was with Kenyan supporters in Bordeaux, France, observed Shujaa’s decisive 26-7 win against Uruguay at the HSBC SVNS World Championship, raising expectations of promotion to the premier division for the upcoming season. This result means Kenya’s advancement now depends on Fiji defeating the USA, which would secure Shujaa’s position among the core teams for the next period. Mwangi commended the team’s resilience and determination, stating, ‘We are pleased that on the final day we succeeded and our players showed resilience by winning 26-5 against Uruguay.’ ‘We believe this victory will provide the points needed to advance to Division One.’ He highlighted the government’s backing, adding, ‘Our players have been well supported and displayed great energy, and I know we will succeed in the future.’ Mwangi continued: ‘President William Ruto has provided us with all the necessary support for our team. We will advance to Division One and more significantly, we will host Division One in Nairobi.’ Head coach Kevin Wambua thanked Mwangi for his consistent support, promising to bring home the championship trophy if the team achieves promotion. Shujaa’s impressive performance in France has renewed hope, with both the government and fans sharing the confidence that Kenya’s rugby athletes are prepared to reach higher levels.
