KEMRI to Establish First Hepatitis B Center in Baringo

by KenyaPolls

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has concluded an accord with the Baringo County Government to establish the country’s first specialized Hepatitis B Research and Treatment Centre in Marigat, a significant advancement in addressing the region’s elevated infection rates.

The project, formalized via a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), confronts a pressing public health emergency. KEMRI Director General Prof. Elijah Songok revealed that Hepatitis B prevalence in Baringo stands at 10 percent, positioning it among Kenya’s most severely affected counties. This significant health challenge directly motivated the establishment of the specialized facility in Marigat.

When fully operational, the center will operate as both a clinical frontline and a national scientific hub. It will provide focused patient screening, specialized treatment, and community awareness initiatives, while concurrently advancing nationwide disease monitoring and academic research.

The scope of the KEMRI-Baringo collaboration extends to other crucial areas of tropical medicine. Prof. Songok indicated that local communities will benefit from clinical developments potentially leading to the world’s first vaccine against Kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis), a neglected tropical disease with endemic presence in the region.

Additionally, the bilateral framework includes provisions for local snake venom collection to expedite scientific development and production of life-saving antivenoms.

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative advancement for regional healthcare. Reinforcing the county’s commitment to the collaborative effort, Governor Cheboi affirmed that his administration would supply the logistical and structural support required to guarantee the program’s success.

The comprehensive medical undertaking is anticipated to significantly reduce healthcare access barriers for local inhabitants while establishing Baringo County as a central hub for medical research and infectious disease management in East Africa.
