President William Ruto revealed plans to purchase an additional ferry for the congested Likoni crossing in Mombasa, aimed at enhancing transportation services in the coastal city.
During his development tour of the Coast region, Ruto stated that the government had allocated Sh3 billion for the initiative, with the new vessel scheduled to commence operations before December.
“I want to assure the people of Mombasa and the international community that we are constructing another ferry,” the President stated while addressing locals at the Likoni channel.
“By December, we have committed Sh3 billion. Come December, we will have an additional ferry to alleviate congestion at this crossing,” he emphasized.
The Head of State also disclosed a further investment of Sh500 million focused on enhancing mobility and transportation infrastructure throughout Mombasa County.
The Likoni Ferry stands as one of Kenya’s crucial transport arteries, linking Mombasa Island to the South Coast.
Daily, thousands of pedestrians, private car owners, public transport operators, and businesspeople depend on the crossing for travel and commerce.
For many years, residents and travelers have expressed worries about traffic bottlenecks, extended waiting times, and overcrowding at the crossing, especially during peak hours and holiday seasons.
These circumstances frequently interrupt transportation and business activities, impacting both local inhabitants and tourists exploring the coastal area.
The anticipated ferry is projected to reduce strain on the channel and facilitate smoother movement of passengers and cargo between the island and mainland regions.
Ruto’s announcement coincided with the commencement of his four-day development tour of the Coast region, where he is set to evaluate and inaugurate multiple initiatives concerning infrastructure, housing, electricity, and economic advancement.
The President affirmed that the government remains dedicated to funding initiatives that enhance public transportation, generate employment opportunities, and foster economic expansion nationwide.
