Three Hurt as Police and Protesters Clash in Moyale

by KenyaPolls

At least three individuals sustained injuries during Thursday, May 14 clashes between police and demonstrators in Moyale town, with one reportedly hit by a bullet.

Initial accounts suggest police fired at protesters rallying for the release of former Chief Dabassa Dambi and Community Elder Gurach Dambala, who are believed to have been abducted.

Although the demonstrations began peacefully Thursday morning, the situation deteriorated after authorities deployed tear gas against the crowds.

Witnesses report that protesters are calling for the suspension of a planned Tittu security camp and the liberation of local elders allegedly taken by security forces.

Activists claimed three individuals were shot, though these reports could not be independently verified at the time of publication.

The wounded protesters were transported to Moyale Sub-County Referral Hospital as tensions mounted in the town, with large gatherings chanting slogans and urging the government to resolve their concerns.

Similar demonstrations occurred in other Marsabit County locations, including Saku, Sololo, and Bori Junction, as residents voiced outrage over the arrests and purported abductions.

These recent protests follow gatherings at Sololo junction on Sunday, May 10, seeking the immediate release of the detained elders.

Community members accuse security agencies of neglecting what they describe as increasing abduction incidents in the area.

Residents report that one elder was seized from his residence on Saturday, May 9, while another was abducted en route to Nairobi after being forced into an unmarked vehicle. Their current locations remain unknown.

The two detained elders had previously opposed measures affecting sections of Marsabit County, according to local accounts.

“They were detained for opposing injustices by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration: The transfer of parts of Marsabit County’s Moyale Constituency to Wajir County through the gazetting of Boranaland as Wajir County’s Eldas constituency, Basir and Tituu locations,” stated one protester on Sunday, May 10.
