The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) revealed intentions to elevate more than 30,000 teaching professionals by December 2026, aligning with governmental initiatives to enhance career advancement opportunities in the public sector.

Eveleen Mitei, the TSC’s Acting Chief Executive, disclosed this information during a gathering with the National Assembly’s Education Committee at Bunge Towers on May 13, 2026.

Mitei indicated that the advancement opportunities would primarily be determined by the number of educators leaving the profession through retirement, resignation, or other departure methods.

She revealed that Ksh2 billion has been allocated for the teacher promotion initiative during the 2026/2027 fiscal year.

The committee, led by Tinderet Constituency Member of Parliament Julius Melly, urged the TSC leadership to expedite the process in response to mounting grievances from educators regarding postponements and regional imbalances in advancement opportunities.

During the committee session, legislators additionally insisted on transparency and equity in executing various educator-focused initiatives across the country.

Simultaneously, Mitei confirmed the confirmation of 20,000 intern teachers from the current cohort of 44,000 during the 2026/2027 Financial Year.

She clarified that educators must complete their required two-year internship program, anticipated to conclude in January 2027, prior to securing permanent positions.

The TSC Chief Executive additionally stated that the Commission cannot employ more educators on permanent and pensionable terms while thousands of intern teachers remain pending confirmation.

During the proceedings, legislators also expressed concerns about teacher welfare, delays in Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA) compensation, and allegations of school administrators withholding educators’ academic credentials.

In her response, Mitei acknowledged that while funding for WIBA compensation had been sought in budget proposals, the request was not granted.

She also mentioned that more than 100,000 educators have been hired in the past three years with additional backing from President William Ruto.
