The digital economy stands as a crucial driver for boosting cross-border commerce throughout Africa. At a side event during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, prominent figures stressed the importance of digital investment and policy changes to strengthen Africa’s rapidly growing technology sector.

Kenya’s ICT Cabinet Secretary, William Kabogo, stressed that Africa has the inherent capability to create digital solutions addressing complex, cross-border challenges. Clara Chappaz, the French Minister for AI and Digital Technologies, observed that the developing partnership between Europe and Africa is moving toward investments offering mutual advantages. She called for a strategic shift to ensure these technological developments directly benefit African youth.

Principal Secretary for Culture Ummi Bashir underscored the economic importance, pointing out that with 60% of Africa’s population being young, the continent is exceptionally well-placed to harness billions of dollars in value from the digital economy.

To protect these developments, the Kenya Development Corporation (KDC) is pushing for legislative reforms. Their aim is to create strong policies that safeguard the intellectual property of young innovators while concurrently offering financial support for digital startups.

Additionally, a joint pledge between France and Kenya centers on establishing peer-to-peer learning platforms, enabling young technology professionals to share knowledge and expand their skills.

The summit also included a NOVA GARAGE event, which acted as a tangible connection between talent and funding. In this session, 15 digital innovators from eight African countries presented their projects to potential investors, demonstrating the practical realization of the continent’s digital capabilities.
