Fear and tension spread across Kisumu County following a violent attack at a funeral gathering that left four mourners injured. The incident took place early morning in Kamgan village, Kadianga area, Upper Nyakach division.
Initial reports indicate the attackers, armed with sharp weapons, targeted mourners, stabbing several individuals before escaping with livestock and mobile phones. One victim remains in critical condition after being transported to Kisumu County Referral Hospital, while three others are under medical care at Nyabondo Mission Hospital.
Among the injured is 18-year-old Raphson Acholla, who was struck with an arrow to his back. Others include Gordon Ouma, 38, who suffered facial injuries from a blunt object, along with Remjius Oyugi, 31, and Silvans Onyango, 31, both of whom were struck in the face. All three are currently admitted at Nyabondo Mission Hospital.
The attack was reported to Maraboi Police Station, prompting security personnel, in collaboration with community members led by Nyakach Deputy County Commissioner Orina Dawin, to pursue the suspects, who are believed to be livestock thieves. The operation resulted in the apprehension of three individuals at Sondu market, where authorities recovered stolen property including ten sheep, one black calf, ripe bananas, and household items.
The suspects, identified as Solomon Onyango, 36, from Koguta; Frank Otieno, 26, from Urudi; and Charles Abongo, 35, from Nyamaroka, are currently detained at Maraboi Police Station pending further investigation. Deputy Commissioner Dawin called on residents to remain alert and cooperate with authorities. “We are committed to bringing all perpetrators to justice. I urge the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities,” he stated.
Local community members voiced shock and concern regarding the incident, demanding improved security measures. “We cannot continue living in fear daily. Funerals should be occasions for mourning and unity, not violence,” expressed one resident. Another added, “The government needs to act swiftly to protect us. These attacks cannot be tolerated.”
The event has intensified discussions about growing insecurity in rural Kisumu areas, with community leaders advocating for enhanced policing efforts and neighborhood watch programs to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
