Child Exploitation Concerns Raised by Advocacy Group

A children’s rights advocacy group is calling on the public to report instances of child exploitation.

The organization has highlighted that numerous witnesses have observed school-aged children working on farms, digging and cultivating planted food crops.

Additional forms of child labor include caring for animals such as cows, pigs, chickens, and sheep, as well as other informal jobs. These children receive inadequate compensation due to lack of representation.

The Alliance Against Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking in Kenya cautions that most affected children eventually drop out of school.

The group intends to pressure law enforcement, national government administration officials, and the children’s department to proactively address child exploitation before formal complaints are lodged.

According to John Gachoka, the organization’s executive director, they are distressed by the employment of underage children.

“Using children for labor is against the law, yet it occurs in plain sight. Those responsible show no compassion for these children. They pay them unfairly and take advantage of their vulnerability,” he stated.

“We will remain vocal in our opposition because exploiting children jeopardizes their future,” Gachoka emphasized.

Gachoka made these remarks during a children’s rights awareness walk organized by the group in Limuru Sub-county.

The walk began in the Nazareth area and concluded at the office of Limuru Deputy County Commissioner Harrison Matevwa.

Ann Ng’endo, a participant, suggested that the administration organize more community gatherings where child rights advocates and children’s officers could be present to educate the community.

“Don’t assume people understand children’s rights simply because they have children at home. Many only learn about these rights when problems arise, which is deeply regrettable,” Ng’endo explained.

At the DCC’s office, Limuru Town Location Chief John Ngugi encouraged community members to safeguard children, emphasizing their innocence. He noted that those exploiting children often claim to be preparing them for life’s challenges.

“Let us unite to protect the nation’s children. Report any concerning activities to us or this organization,” Ngugi urged.

Gachoka explained that their primary goal is to educate the community about children’s rights to ensure widespread awareness.
