Dr Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta County was thrown into panic on Thursday afternoon, April 30, 2026, when a fire erupted at the institution.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident, noting that the origin of the blaze remains undetermined at this time.

“A fire has occurred at Dr Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta County. The cause is still under investigation,” the Kenya Red Cross reported.

As the fire spread through what appeared to be a classroom building, thick smoke filled the surrounding area, creating a dangerous situation.

Students and teachers found themselves in a precarious position, with some individuals making a hasty escape to safety.

Kenya Red Cross personnel reportedly reached the location and are implementing measures to bring the situation under control.

“Community members, students, and our Kenya Red Cross team in Taita Taveta are present and actively working to manage the situation,” the organization stated.

As of the latest information, no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed, with authorities planning to assess the area soon.

This unfortunate event marks a recurrence for the school, as similar incidents occurred in 2025 when two dormitories were destroyed by fire, resulting in the indefinite closure of the institution.

The timing of this recent incident, occurring shortly after the resumption of term two, has prompted concerns about potential causes.

In a separate incident, Mithiru Girls’ School in Limuru also faced a devastating fire that completely destroyed a dormitory, causing significant financial losses.

School authorities attributed the blaze to a probable electrical malfunction and requested parents to retrieve their children.

The school administration did not provide information regarding when classes would resume, given that a major dormitory had been completely destroyed.

“One parent shared that the institution contacted them, informing them of the indefinite closure and instructing them to collect their children.”
