Court Order Restores Kenya Institute of Management Operations

The Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) has fully resumed operations following a High Court decision that temporarily suspended a government directive revoking its accreditation and mandating closure of all campuses nationwide.
In a public notice released Wednesday, the institution confirmed that “the High Court has officially stayed the enforcement of the revocation notice issued by TVETA,” permitting learning and administrative activities to proceed across all locations.
This development concludes a series of events that commenced on April 20 when the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority revoked KIM’s accreditation, citing significant regulatory violations.
The authority alleged the institute offered unauthorized programs, utilized unlicensed instructors, and issued qualifications beyond its legal authority.
TVETA’s directive asserted that KIM “lacks the legal authority to award qualifications,” stating certificates issued after 2018 would not be recognized for employment or further education.
In response, KIM immediately filed an urgent petition in court contesting the regulator’s decision.
The High Court approved judicial review and postponed implementation of the closure order until the case resolution.
Justice Musyoka indicated he examined the petition documents before designating the matter as urgent, enabling KIM to continue its legal challenge.
“The honourable court be pleased to grant leave to apply for judicial review… to quash the decision,” stated part of KIM’s petition.
Resumption of activities
Following the judicial decision, KIM announced normal operations resuming, declaring:
“All Academic Programs have resumed across all campuses. Corporate trainings, membership services, and administrative functions continue as usual.”
The institution also assured students and stakeholders of its commitment to maintaining educational quality and resolving disputes with regulators.
“We assure students and partners of our unwavering dedication to quality education… and continued cooperation with all regulatory bodies,” the notice emphasized.
Previously, KIM had indicated that certain servicesincluding corporate training and professional membership programsremained operational despite the regulatory disagreement.
The dispute has raised concerns within the education sector, with stakeholders highlighting the uncertainty confronting thousands of students.
Consumer organizations had criticized the closure notice for neglecting to specify protections for affected learners.
