Publishers Deliver Grade 10 Textbooks to Public Senior Schools

The Ministry of Education has distributed more than 1.19 million Grade 10 textbooks to public senior schools nationwide to support effective learning implementation under the Competency-Based Curriculum.

According to a Sunday statement from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, this distribution process, involving 21 contracted Kenyan publishers, accounts for 71% of the total books planned for distribution as of February 13, 2026.

The publishers involved in this initiative include Kenya Literature Bureau, Oxford University Press East Africa, East African Educational Publishers, Longhorn Publishers, Storymoja Publishers, and other approved local companies.

As of February 13, KICD reported that 1,670,264 textbooks had been ordered, with 1,193,070 already distributed to schools.

Nairobi County recorded the highest distribution rate at 86.71%, followed by Central Kenya at 80.18%.

The Western region (comprising Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia counties) achieved a distribution rate of 79.77%, while Nyanza region (Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira) reached 75.40%, and Rift Valley stood at 67.46%.

The Eastern region reported a distribution rate of 64.94%, Coast region at 60.25%, and North Eastern region at 48.57%.

The Ministry has assured educational institutions and stakeholders that the remaining textbooks will be delivered promptly, with all Grade 10 course materials expected to arrive at public senior schools by the end of February 2026.

On January 6, 2026, publishers received Ksh.5.64 billion to support the printing and distribution of Grade 10 textbooks.

These funds were utilized to settle outstanding debts owed to publishers and to facilitate the printing of 35 approved textbooks and literary works for Grade 10 students in public schools.

KICD CEO Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, in a joint statement with Kenya Publishers Association representative Kiarie Kamau, confirmed that payments to publishers and clearance of pending bills had commenced.

The Ministry further reported that out of the 11,867,325 textbooks ordered, 11,142,230 have been printed and 8,355,780 have been distributed to date.
