Kindiki puts Meru security team on notice over cattle rustling

by KenyaPolls

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has issued a hard line to security teams in Meru County, calling for urgent action against the relentless cattle rustling in the north of the county. Speaking at a security briefing in Mutuati, Kindiki condemned the increasing number of livestock raids, which he said are being carried out by armed criminals who bring violence and deep economic hardship to local communities. He insisted that the rustling menace must be fully eradicated, and warned officers against colluding with rustlers.
Kindiki also took aim at security personnel he says have shown laxity or collusion with bandits. He pledged that officers found helping criminals for cheap financial gain will not be quietly transferred — instead, they will be fired and prosecuted. At the same time, he commended hardworking officers operating in risky terrains and promised that those who distinguish themselves in combating the rustling threat will receive promotions and state honours.
The tough rhetoric comes as part of a broader crackdown. The government has already deployed additional National Police Reservists (NPRs) to Meru North, and has stepped up the presence of elite units, including the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and General Service Unit (GSU), in rustling hotspots. Kindiki urged local residents to partner with security agencies by sharing intelligence, arguing that community cooperation is key to dismantling the rustling networks.
The impact of Kindiki’s warning could be significant. By targeting corruption within security forces and promising accountability, his message may help restore trust among Meru’s herding communities who have long suffered from raids. If implemented effectively, the strengthened security measures could break the cycle of livestock theft. Looking ahead, Kindiki reaffirmed his commitment to Operation Maliza Uhalifu — a mission to stamp out banditry across Kenya — with a firm pledge to rid Meru of cattle rustling in the shortest time possible. the-star.co.ke+2the-star.co.ke+2
