Uasin Gishu has reported more than 16,000 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in the past year.
Key Statistics:
Physical & Emotional Violence: 13,606 cases
Sexual Violence: 1,456 cases
Notable Victims: Included prominent athletes such as Agnes Tirop, Rebecca Cheptegei, Damaris Muthee, and university student Ivy Wangechi.
County Response:
Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea highlighted the sharp rise in cases and the need for coordinated community interventions.
Calls for community sensitisation, male engagement, and dialogue within families to foster empathy and understanding.
Emphasis on tackling alcoholism as a root cause of GBV; Moiben rehabilitation centre plays a key role in this effort.
Collaboration with faith-based and civil society organisations to strengthen community cohesion and preventive measures.

The launch of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in Eldoret aligns with the international campaign running from Nov 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to Dec 10 (Human Rights Day).
