New program launched to boost smart farming across Kenya

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has launched a new initiative aimed at accelerating smart farming nationwide, highlighting the country’s commitment to modernizing agriculture through technology. The program, supported by the Kenya AI Skilling Alliance (KAISA) launched on 29 October 2025, seeks to equip farmers, startups, and innovators with digital tools and skills to enhance productivity, improve resource management, and promote sustainable farming practices. Officials say the program will leverage artificial intelligence (AI), precision irrigation, drone monitoring, and data analytics to address local agricultural challenges while boosting economic growth.
The initiative complements the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy launched on 27 March 2025, which provides a framework for integrating AI and other digital technologies into sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and finance. Pilot projects under the program include AI-assisted crop disease detection, predictive analytics for market pricing, and automated solar-powered irrigation systems. These efforts demonstrate how technology can improve decision-making, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase yields for farmers across both rural and urban communities.
Agricultural experts and industry observers have welcomed the new program, noting that it has the potential to transform farming practices, increase food security, and create opportunities for agritech entrepreneurship. They emphasize the importance of inclusive access, digital literacy, and robust infrastructure to ensure broad-based benefits. Looking ahead, Kenya’s smart farming initiative is expected to drive innovation, enhance agricultural productivity, and solidify the country’s position as a leader in technology-driven farming solutions across Africa.
