Police Taking Action Against Driver Who Assaulted Traffic Officer

Kenyan authorities have confirmed they are pursuing legal measures against a motorist documented on video assaulting a traffic officer.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, May 17, officials reported that the driver captured in footage confronting and attacking the officer has been identified, with steps being taken to follow proper legal procedures.

The National Police Service expressed strong disapproval of a widely shared video showing a civilian engaging in physical violence against a traffic policeman performing his duties in Embakasi. “The individual has been identified, and the legal process is proceeding,” read an official police communiqué.

Characterizing the assault as a grave breach of legal standards, the police service emphasized that attacks on officers compromise public safety and undermine the effectiveness of law enforcement.

The contentious incident gained widespread attention through social media platforms the previous day, depicting what seemed to be a physical dispute between a driver and a traffic enforcement officer.

Visual footage shows the civilian making physical contact with the officer, who initially maintained composure, likely overwhelmed by the angry individual in the Embakasi location.

As the conflict intensified, additional officers intervened to de-escalate the situation, with the aggressor temporarily restrained. The specific trigger for the confrontation remains undetermined.

In addition to the Embakasi incident, the police service reported a separate case where a Metro Shuttle bus crew purportedly detained a traffic officer while he was implementing traffic rules. Police authorities stated that all parties involved have been apprehended and the relevant vehicle has been seized.

The police service also highlighted another assault case in Mwiki, Kasarani, where a woman was deliberately set ablaze following an attack involving flammable substances. The victim is currently receiving critical medical care at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Initial findings indicate the Mwiki assault might be connected to political conflicts, with criminal investigation detectives now handling the case.

“The organization will firmly respond against anyone who challenges police authority or obstructs officers in their professional responsibilities,” the police service stated.

Persons possessing additional details regarding these incidents have been encouraged to contact local police stations or utilize official confidential reporting channels as the investigations progress.
