Origins and Evolution of Mother’s Day

by KenyaPolls

Mother’s Day represents a cherished occasion dedicated to celebrating mothers and acknowledging their vital contributions within families and society at large. Although contemporary Mother’s Day celebrations are commonly linked to the United States, the tradition of honoring maternal figures has roots in ancient Greek and Roman festivals dedicated to mother goddesses. During the 16th century, this observance evolved as individuals returned to their ‘mother church’ and devoted time to being with their mothers. The modern Mother’s Day celebration later took shape in the United States during the early 20th century, with the first recognized observance occurring in West Virginia in 1908. By 1914, then-US President Woodrow Wilson formally established Mother’s Day as a national holiday. Presently, Mother’s Day is observed worldwide, with celebrations occurring on different dates across various nations. In Kenya, the celebration takes place on May 10. For 2026, the designated theme ‘Motherhood: Stewardship that Shapes Generations’ emphasizes the lasting impact of mothers in shaping families and communities.
