Orengo Questions Removal of Security Team

Siaya County governor James Orengo has expressed concern over what he describes as an “arbitrary and unauthorized” withdrawal of his personal and residential security team by the National Police Service.
In a formal complaint seen by KPC on Wednesday and directed to the Inspector General of Police, Orengo criticized the action, noting that his security detail and officers at his Nairobi residence were removed on Tuesday, May 19, without any prior warning, official notification, or arrangements for replacements.
“The abrupt, unwarranted withdrawal of my complete personal security team, along with the security personnel assigned to my Nairobi residence, was carried out suddenly, without advance warning, formal communication, or the assignment of any alternative security,” Orengo stated in a press release issued the same day.
The governor stressed that security for state officials is not a privilege but a constitutional right.
“As a public official, the provision of security is not a concession, an indulgence, or a political benefit. It is a constitutional requirement and a legal entitlement based on Kenyan laws designed to safeguard the safety, continuity, and effective governance by public leadership,” he maintained.
Orengo has demanded an immediate clarification from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and the Inspector General of Police regarding the reasons for the withdrawal.
He additionally requested the restoration or replacement of his official security team at all locations, including his Nairobi residence.
In spite of the development, the governor confirmed his ongoing dedication to public service. “We persist in our duties with vigor and national pride,” he remarked.
The complaint was sent to the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, the Chairperson of the Council of Governors, and the County Police Commander in Siaya.
