Narok Court Chaos as Mob Tries to Free Murder Accused

Violence broke out at the Narok High Court on Tuesday, June 2, when a mob engaged in confrontation with law enforcement authorities while reportedly trying to secure the release of a person accused of murder.

Local inhabitants invaded the judicial compound after Matunke Mayone was taken into custody, facing accusations of homicide related to a fatality that apparently transpired during a property conflict in Maji Moto, Narok County.

Community members were observed congregating near the courthouse, attempting to force entry through barriers and disrupt ongoing legal processes.

Judicial proceedings came to a halt as authorities discharged firearms and utilized teargas to disperse individuals seeking to obstruct the accused’s detention.

Visual recordings from outside the courthouse complex displayed tear gas filling the atmosphere, with firearm discharges and cries of distress audible in the background.

The recordings also depicted the arrival of a law enforcement vehicle as personnel worked to reestablish control, with officers positioned throughout the vicinity.

The High Court has mandated that Mayone continue in detention for three days, with the case scheduled for review on Thursday, June 4.

The judicial authority indicated it is awaiting confirmation of whether a psychological evaluation has been completed before advancing with additional legal actions.

This occurrence contributes to an emerging trend of property conflicts in Narok County that have created tension among community members.

Escalating tensions in Maji Moto recently led Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia to mediate and engage with local inhabitants, attempting to alleviate concerns stemming from an extended property disagreement.

In 2025, a 6,500-acre plot in Ang’ata Barikoi, Kilgoris, became the center of intense controversy amid apprehensions that certain areas might be removed from local possession.

The disturbances compelled authorities to designate Maji Moto as one of the in Narok County for 30 days, after multiple aggressive confrontations.
