Nairobi is preparing to host the Union of African Karate Federations East Africa Championship in 2026 next week.

The event will take place from May 28 to 31 at the Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena.

Under the auspices of the Union of African Karate Federations, the championship will bring together elite athletes, coaches, referees, and officials from 14 East African countries.

Over four days, cadet, junior, and senior participants will compete in individual and team events, showcasing exceptional skill and precision.

“We placed second in this competition last year and we are highly motivated to secure first place this time,” stated team captain Francis Wamukui.

“Competing on home soil provides additional inspiration, and we are determined not to be defeated in our own country.”

Kenya will send a 50-member delegation, chosen following a rigorous two-month training camp led by certified World Karate Federation coaches.

The training focused on tactical expertise, physical conditioning, discipline, and technical accuracy.

The team is entering with confidence after finishing second at last year’s East Africa Championship in Ethiopia, where Kenya secured 20 medals10 gold, nine silver, and one bronze.

Organizers anticipate that home advantage and thorough preparation will help Kenya achieve the top position.

Prominent athletes include Advocate Mercy Wamboi, who successfully combines her legal profession with karate.

“The common belief is that karate is exclusively for men. This is merely a misconception; in reality, there are more women in our camp than men. We are not merely participants; we excelling,” she noted.

“This championship will demonstrate this reality to many spectators.”

The tournament will also draw high-ranking officials, including the UFAK President, the World Karate Federation Vice President, and senior refereeing and technical personnel, highlighting Kenya’s increasing capability to host major international sports competitions.

In addition to the competition, UFAK will conduct specialized training programs, seminars, and assessments for coaches and referees to enhance officiating standards and develop technical expertise throughout Africa.

The Nairobi event represents an important preparation for Kenya before the African Karate Championship in Algeria (September) and the Commonwealth Karate Games in Scotland (October).

“The Kenya Karate Federation extends its deepest gratitude to the Government of Kenya for its essential support in hosting this championship and for ongoing investment in sports development and promotion,” stated Kenya Karate Federation official Eng. Richard Binga.

He also acknowledged sponsors, partners, security forces, medical staff, volunteers, and the broader karate community for their contributions to organizing the competition.
