Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has addressed the Ishiara Market incident in Embu county where three individuals lost their lives during a protest. The Cabinet Secretary praised the prompt response by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja in ordering a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances. “I am pleased that the IG has deployed senior investigators from headquarters to examine this incident thoroughly,” stated Murkomen, warning that police misconduct will not be accepted within the National Police Service. He promised that officers found responsible will face consequences and underscored the need for ongoing training to meet contemporary security challenges. During an address to more than 7,000 recruits at the GSU training college’s Embakasi B campus, Murkomen voiced concerns about evolving security threats, noting that the National Police Service has updated its training curriculum accordingly. “The NPS is equipping both serving officers and new recruits with modern tools and techniques to provide Kenyans with superior service, particularly in crowd control and management,” remarked Murkomen. The Cabinet Secretary highlighted the necessity of continuous professional development to keep pace with global security transformations. He also revealed the restoration of regional training centers and centers of excellence to offer regular refresher courses for officers. Additionally, he outlined several key initiatives the ministry is implementing to address challenges in human resources, healthcare, infrastructure, ICT modernization, and mobility.
