Musalia Mudavadi has called on Kenyan political leaders to embrace non-violence as the nation approaches the 2027 General Election. Addressing the opening of the sixth Legislative Summit of the County Assemblies Forum in Mombasa, where he serves as Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister, Mudavadi emphasized the invaluable nature of peace. “We must reject violence as we move toward the elections. Avoid supporting any violent activities leading up to the 2027 polls,” he stated. The government official urged citizens to support elections that are peaceful, transparent, impartial, and trustworthy. “I can confirm that Kenya will conduct free, fair, and credible elections. Peace is essential for achieving this objective,” he stressed. Mudavadi highlighted the priceless worth of peace, observing that even advanced nations in the Middle East are recognizing its significance. “I’m not referring to the worth of airports or highways. What’s the true value of peace? We’ve witnessed nations with exceptional infrastructure becoming ineffective because of conflict,” he explained. The minister lauded the County Assemblies Forum for organizing the summit, hailing it as a significant forum for discussion, deliberation, and cooperation on decentralized governance. “Over the years, this summit has become a crucial venue for dialogue, institutional examination, and substantive interaction regarding the responsibilities of County Assemblies within our constitutional framework,” he noted. Mudavadi indicated that this year’s summit theme, “Resilient County Assemblies: Reinforcing Representation, Legislation, and Oversight,” is opportune and consistent with the constitutional duties of county administrations. He also mentioned President William Ruto’s recent address to the Nairobi County Assembly as a landmark occasion since the 2010 Kenyan Constitution’s enactment, portraying it as proof of the administration’s dedication to devolution. The official recommended that county assemblies utilize their Standing Order provisions to invite experts to speak on important matters. He reaffirmed that devolution continues to be one of Kenya’s most revolutionary governance foundations, delivering services nearer to citizens, boosting community involvement, and reinforcing local accountability. “The effectiveness of devolution relies not just on the delegation of responsibilities and finances but also on the robustness of institutions that maintain accountability, representation, and legal procedures at the county level,” he stated. Mudavadi commended Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) for their legislative, supervisory, and representative functions, pointing out their increasing assurance and alertness in examining financial plans and policies. Nevertheless, he recognized existing obstacles, referencing matters brought up during the CAF Annual General Meeting on February 19, 2026, at the KICC in Nairobi.
