KPA Launches Green Port Initiative at Mombasa to Reduce Emissions and Enhance Efficiency

The Kenya Ports Authority has introduced significant operational and structural reforms at Mombasa Port, aiming to establish it as an environmentally conscious maritime center as ship traffic continues to increase.

According to KPA officials, the port transformation follows the landmark first arrival of the CMA CGM Adventure Ship on May 25.

This vessel operates mainly using liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of conventional fuel oil, enabling pollution-free docking procedures.

During the vessel’s reception, KPA managing director William Ruto emphasized that eco-friendly ships are becoming standard practice rather than optional, driven by tightening global environmental regulations.

“Such vessels represent the new industry norm as we transition toward greener operations that prioritize sustainability and environmental protection,” he explained.

Ruto outlined how Mombasa Port is proactively enhancing its infrastructure to support a growing fleet of similar vessels, maintaining competitive advantage in the evolving maritime landscape.

He revealed that KPA has implemented its ambitious Green Ports Policy, implementing extensive modernization throughout East Africa’s primary maritime entry point.

A key component involves enabling large international cargo ships to shut down their loud, high-pollution diesel engines during port stays and connect to shore-based electrical power.

Furthermore, the authority is accelerating the deployment of solar energy systems across port facilities to complement existing power supplies, while progressively replacing outdated, fuel-intensive equipment with hybrid cargo-handling cranes.

These developments coincide with Mombasa and Lamu Ports emerging as dominant regional centers, having accommodated numerous vessels recently, including those requiring unscheduled dockings.

Mombasa Port is concurrently experiencing substantial development through a new terminal expansion project.

The initiative concentrates on renovating and enhancing two existing terminals at Mombasa Port as part of broader efforts to reinforce Kenya’s transportation and logistics capabilities.

This expansion will also increase port capacity, modernize cargo handling processes, and enhance transportation networks connecting Kenya to the broader East and Central African regions.
