Kisumu women rebuild lives with STADA’s support

Do women and girls find their voices acknowledged in society, or does justice remain unheard as many endure suffering in silence? In Kisumu, an organization demonstrates that silence can be shattered, dignity restored, and hope renewed.

For years, widows and vulnerable women have faced rejection, property dispossession, abuse, and neglect. Many were rendered homeless, desolate, and without assistance.

Yet through STADA, a community-based organization guided by lawyer Patricia Nudi Orao, women and girls are rediscovering their identities and reclaiming their standing in society.

STADA has been at the vanguard of empowering women through social and legal support initiatives. Certain widows have obtained newly constructed homes following years of inhabiting deplorable conditions.

Others, such as Lydia Auma Otieno, have been aided in legal struggles, including reclaiming land that was nearly seized from them. “I had lost everything, but STADA stood by me. Now I have my land back, and I feel human again,” Lydia expressed with relief.

The organization has also invested in young women via training and mentorship programs. One recipient, Roselyn Apiyo, acquired tailoring skills and now works at STADA producing reusable sanitary pads. “This employment provided me with independence. I can sustain myself and motivate other girls to trust in their capabilities,” Roselyn elaborated.

For many, this support transcends mere assistanceit signifies the restoration of dignity, self-assurance, and a voice within society. Milka Oluoch, a widow, expressed her gratitude: “I had lost hope and everything, but now I have peace. My children are in school, and I can sleep without fear.”

Patricia Nudi Orao believes justice must extend beyond constitutional provisions and become a lived experience. “Human rights should not remain theoretical. They must be experienced in the everyday lives of women and girls. Leaders must guarantee that dignity is safeguarded and justice is attainable,” she urged.

In a community where vulnerable women are frequently marginalized and silenced, STADA has emerged as a beacon of resilience and hope. As these women reconstruct their lives, one question persists: will society ultimately stand up for women and girls, or continue witnessing their silent suffering?
