Kenyan television audiences are prioritizing informative content over purely recreational programming, with news broadcasts capturing the majority of national screen time.
Statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya’s quarterly audience measurement report for January to March 2026 demonstrate that news programming commands a substantial 46.1% of television viewership throughout the country. This significant viewership underscores how the evening news has become an indispensable daily ritual for families congregating in living rooms across the nation.
Following the day’s events, scripted narratives and general entertainment serve as the primary and secondary attractions for television watchers.
Entertainment and drama series attract a robust 21.5% viewership portion, while movies claim 13.0% of viewer attention.
Sports and music programs show nearly identical popularity levels, accounting for 11.1% and 11.0% respectively, indicating an even appetite for live sporting events and contemporary music programming.
The remainder of television schedules receives divided attention among specific categories. Soap operas maintain a 4.7% dedicated audience, closely followed by religious and inspirational programs at 3.2%, and educational or informative shows at 3.1%.
Comedy and light entertainment constitute just 1.9% of viewer interest, while dedicated political coverage stands at 1.7%. Completing the broadcast preferences, talk shows secure the smallest audience share at 1.6%.
Despite the variety of entertainment alternatives available, factual news reporting continues to serve as the fundamental anchor maintaining Kenyans’ engagement with their television sets.
