Kenya has dispatched a team of twelve exceptional university students to represent the nation at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals 2026 in Shenzhen, China, where they will face off against over 2,000 students globally in one of the world’s most prominent technology competitions.

The students departed the country on Saturday following a send-off ceremony led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who encouraged them to represent Kenya with distinction on the international stage.

The students were chosen via the Huawei ICT Academy Programme after excelling in national and regional rounds of the competition, securing their place among the world’s leading young technology talents.

During a flag-off ceremony at his office, Mudavadi congratulated the students on their achievement, noting that their selection demonstrated dedication, hard work, and exceptional ability.

“You are present not by chance, but through merit,” Mudavadi stated.

He advised the students to utilize the opportunity to display Kenya’s developing digital capabilities and innovation potential to a worldwide audience.

The PCS also highlighted the significance of collaboration between government, academic institutions, and private enterprises in advancing Kenya’s digital transformation objectives.

He stressed that such partnerships remain essential in developing future-ready professionals and establishing Kenya as an influential participant in the worldwide digital economy.

The twelve students, representing diverse universities across the nation, will participate in networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technology disciplines during the global finals.

At the ceremony, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Robert Kinyua prompted the students to envision beyond traditional employment and become opportunity creators.

“Students must aim high by generating future employment opportunities and assisting in bridging Kenya’s employment gap,” he emphasized.

Kinyua motivated the students to apply innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship to tackle societal challenges and contribute to national advancement.

Huawei Kenya reaffirmed its dedication to supporting digital skills development in Kenya through collaborations with universities and government organizations.

The company indicated that the Huawei ICT Academy and annual Huawei ICT Competition continue to equip young individuals with practical industry expertise, international experience, and exposure to emerging technologies.

“Today, a group of twelve outstanding Kenyan students representing various universities left for Shenzhen, China, to represent the country at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals 2026,” Huawei Kenya communicated in a statement.

“Selected based on merit, commitment, and excellence, these young innovators will compete with more than 2,000 students globally, showcasing Kenya’s expanding ICT talent, innovation, and digital potential.”

Huawei added that it remains focused on cultivating the next generation of digital leaders through skills development, innovation, and global engagement.

The Huawei ICT Competition has evolved into a significant international platform enabling students to evaluate their technical expertise, gain practical experience, interact with peers from diverse nations, and present their capabilities on a global scale.

For Team Kenya, the competition offers not only a chance to contend for top honors but also to demonstrate the nation’s growing status as a center for innovation, technology, and digital expertise.
