Kenya’s standing as a technology leader was significantly enhanced when four university students earned first place at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, marking the first time a Kenyan team has won the Grand Prize in the competition’s decade-long history.
This accomplishment is being recognized as a pivotal point for the nation’s digital advancement and proof of the high standard of ICT education available in Kenyan higher education institutions.
Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo commended the students for elevating Kenya’s presence on the worldwide technology platform with their exceptional performance against international rivals.
Kabogo remembered encountering and acknowledging the team during the Connected Africa Summit 2026 prior to their China trip, expressing his pride in their outstanding achievement upon returning with the competition’s most prestigious honor.
The winning team consisted of Kevin Tuei from Tharaka University, Catherine Atieno from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Brian Ngugi Kamau from Mount Kenya University, and Salem Kim from Machakos University.
According to the Cabinet Secretary, the students showcased remarkable technical proficiency, creativity, teamwork, and determination throughout the worldwide competition, surpassing teams from many nations.
Their victory is considered proof of Kenya’s growing digital environment and the success of current initiatives to provide young people with cutting-edge technological capabilities.
Kabogo pointed out that the success validates the government’s dedication to investing in digital education, innovation, and technological skills as fundamental elements of economic expansion and youth development.
He also acknowledged the universities, educators, mentors, and industry collaborators who contributed to preparing the students for the global competition, emphasizing the value of combined efforts in developing top-tier talent.
The Huawei ICT Competition is considered one of the premier technology competitions for university students globally, offering contestants a chance to demonstrate their expertise in networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation.
Technology experts believe this win will motivate more Kenyan students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while enhancing Kenya’s position as a regional pioneer in technological advancement and digital progress.
The victory also supports the government’s Digital Superhighway initiative, which aims to broaden digital infrastructure, improve connectivity, and generate job opportunities through technology-based growth.
As the celebrations persist, the accomplishment is being celebrated as a notable achievement for Kenya’s ICT industry and compelling evidence that Kenyan youth have the ability and potential to excel at the most advanced international level.
For many analysts, Team Kenya’s triumph represents not only a moment of national pride but also a preview of the nation’s promising future as a center for technological innovation and excellence across Africa.
