A record-breaking 8,000 young chess players from all corners of Kenya gathered at Mang’u High School in Kiambu County for the 2026 National Youth and Cadet Chess Championship, a significant occasion in the nation’s mind-sport calendar. The three-day tournament, featuring competitors in 12 different age and skill levels, also serves as the selection process for the national chess team that will participate in major international competitions later in the year. Participants engaged in intense competition, vying for the 11 qualifying positions in each category that grant entry to the round-robin play-offs. From these play-offs, 36 exceptional players will be selected to represent Kenya in international competitions such as the African Youth Chess Championships in Kampala and other global chess tournaments. Among the notable competitors, four-time national champion Zuri Kaloki once again demonstrated her superiority, securing the first position in the girls’ Under-16 category. In the Under-18 girls’ section, Angel Kagambi from Buruburu Girls School achieved victory, displaying tactical mastery throughout the event. Chess Kenya officials report that the unprecedented attendance reflects the swift expansion of chess in Kenya, particularly among younger generations, and emphasizes the sport’s increasing prominence in schools and communities across the country. The federation’s emphasis on intellectual growth and international recognition was supported by both coaches and players, who consider the championship an essential foundation for developing world-class talent.
