KenGen Marks One Million Tree Milestone in Climate Initiative

A visionary environmental enthusiast stood amid young plants and rich earth, witnessing a simple act of cultivation transform into a significant milestone for the nation’s ecological path.

That individual, Ambassador Hillary Kiplagat-Buzeki Nebo, commenced his initial formal role as Kenya’s 15 Billion Trees Campaign Ambassador, already accompanied by a meaningful yet emblematic achievement.

He was accompanied by KenGen’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Peter Njenga, along with Operations General Manager Engineer Julius Odumbe, in commemorating the planting of KenGen’s one-millionth tree.

This accomplishment, achieved in merely ten months, was recognized as evidence of increasing corporate dedication to ecological recovery, especially in the power industry where environmental sustainability is progressively becoming integral to strategic planning rather than a supplementary effort.

For Ambassador Buzeki Nebo, also a Guinness World Records recipient, the occasion conveyed a more profound significance.

“This achievement demonstrates what is possible when organizations, leadership, and communities unite behind a common environmental objective,” he stated.

He praised KenGen for what he described as its persistent dedication to environmental sustainability and its proactive involvement in promoting Kenya’s national tree-planting program.

He additionally positioned the initiative within an international context, highlighting its correspondence with Sustainable Development Goal 13 focused on Climate Action.

In his view, sustainability has evolved from being a theoretical concept to something that should be integrated into regular organizational functions and choices.

Nevertheless, while the one-millionth tree milestone was being acknowledged, focus swiftly shifted toward future endeavors.

The ambassador underscored that planting represents merely the initial phase, emphasizing the necessity of guaranteeing high tree survival rates, enhancing ecological rehabilitation methods, and expanding forestation initiatives through scientifically informed and sustainable approaches.

He also stressed the significance of maintaining partnerships with essential parties, such as the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, the Ministry of Energy, The National Treasury and Economic Planning, the National Environment Management Authority, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Kenya Forest Service, and the Kenya Forest Research Institute.
