Karichu Leads by One Stroke Ahead of Final Limuru Round

Limuru Country Club professional John Karichu claimed outright leadership after round three of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing Qualifying School, following a significant reshuffling of the leaderboard on Thursday.
Karichu delivered a steady 1-under par 71 to reach 1-under par 215 total, establishing a slender one-stroke advantage heading into Friday’s concluding round.
His consistent performance featured five birdies at the 1st, 6th, 8th, 15th and 18th holes, allowing him to systematically surpass the previous day’s leaders.
A birdie on the final hole sealed an impressive finish and secured his position at the tournament’s forefront.
“It was a productive day for me. I maintained patience, particularly in the early stages, and focused on creating advantageous opportunities,” stated Karichu.
“I understood the course would present challenges for everyone today, so the critical approach was to remain disciplined and capitalize on available chances.
“Securing those birdies, especially toward the end, was crucial. However, there’s still another round remaining, so the competition isn’t concluded. My current priority is to remain composed, adhere to my strategy, and complete the task tomorrow,” he added.

Karichu’s advancement occurred as overnight front-runner Ali Wasim encountered difficulties, carding a 3-over par 75 to drop to second place at even par 216. The elite amateur, who had maintained the lead through the first two rounds, faced challenges sustaining momentum, relinquishing his previous three-stroke buffer.
“It was one of those rounds where several elements didn’t align in my favor,” explained Wasim.
“I committed errors that proved costly, but that’s golf. The significant aspect is that I remain competitive and possess an opportunity heading into the final round.
“Tomorrow involves mental recalibration, maintaining patience and confidence in my abilities. I’ve positioned myself favorably, so the focus is delivering another strong effort,” he added.
Round one joint leader William Odek occupies third position at 2-over par 218 following a 74, staying within potential contention.
American professional Andrew Procter ranks fourth at 3-over par 219, while elite amateur Sammy Mulama holds fifth place at 4-over par 220.
India’s Sujan Shah completes the top six at 7-over par 223, with the leaderboard remaining densely packed before the final round.
With substantial opportunities at stake on Friday, multiple contenders pursue top honors and valuable ranking points as they seek Sunshine Development Tour qualification for the 2026/27 season.
