Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi commended President William Ruto for selecting the county to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, noting that the occasion has enabled local residents to feel the genuine sense of inclusion and national unity. He pointed out that for extended periods, communities in Northern Kenya had experienced marginalization, yet the choice to host the national gathering in Wajir proved that all regions of Kenya are equally appreciated. The governor also expressed appreciation for President William Ruto’s facilitation of national identity card distribution to eligible Kenyans, stating that this initiative had reinstated dignity and enabled more people to utilize government services and opportunities. He detailed the remarkable transformation of Wajir County’s healthcare sector. Abdullahi revealed that previously, one medical professional was tasked with providing healthcare to over 700,000 individuals across a sprawling 56,000 square kilometers. The situation has now improved substantially with the county benefitting from 76 medical officers and in excess of 100 healthcare professionals operating across 174 medical facilities. He further mentioned the enhanced availability of specialized services that previously required residents to undertake long journeys, including surgical care now accessible throughout all sub-counties. Furthermore, Wajir Teaching and Referral Hospital now provides comprehensive emergency care and blood transfusion services, which he noted has significantly enhanced access to quality, life-saving medical care for Wajir’s population. The governor emphasized the economic advantages resulting from the preparations for the festivities, noting that the construction of the new stadium and associated infrastructure development generated thousands of temporary employment opportunities for local inhabitants. He stated that these investments had stimulated commercial activities, enhanced public amenities, and created sustainable development that would continue supporting the county’s prosperity long after the event concluded. Abdullahi also welcomed the advancement of the Isiolo-Mandera Road initiative, characterizing it as a transformative project that would improve transportation links, commerce, and mobility throughout Northern Kenya. He additionally praised the establishment of a permanent government administrative center in Wajir County, noting that this would bring essential services closer to citizens and reinforce governmental representation in the area. In his speech, the governor acknowledged veteran opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga for his significant contributions to Kenya’s democratic development. He also proposed that the newly built stadium be named after the late Hon. Ahmed Khalif to honor his dedicated service and leadership, a suggestion that President William Ruto promptly approved. As a token of gratitude and respect, Governor Abdullahi presented President Ruto with 100 camels representing the people of Wajir, symbolizing the county’s rich cultural heritage, renowned hospitality, and appreciation for the development initiatives implemented in the region.
