Detectives have taken five individuals into custody who are suspected of being part of a notorious criminal organization responsible for motor vehicle and livestock thefts spanning Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Murang’a counties, as confirmed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The intelligence-focused operation commenced following the mysterious disappearance of a Toyota Sienta, a case initially reported at Kiaruhiu Police Station in Nyeri County.
Guided by critical intelligence, law enforcement authorities apprehended the gang’s leader in Kagicha area, as he was preparing to rendezvous with criminal associates to sell the stolen vehicle.
During questioning, the suspect directed officers to Skuta area in Nyeri County, where the missing Sienta was discovered concealed with counterfeit license plates.
The operation proceeded with additional actions, intercepting an escape vehiclea Toyota Succeed transporting four accomplices.
A swift inspection of the vehicle revealed ten sisal ropes, a panga, two knives, a rungu, and a master key, further clarifying their criminal intentions.
As investigations progressed, authorities learned that on the same night the gang stole the vehicle, they also abducted and slaughtered livestock, subsequently selling the meat to unscrupulous butchers, contributing to a lawless black market.
It has also been determined that the gang maintains connections to an ongoing stock theft case presently being heard at the Kerugoya Law Courts.
All suspects remain in custody, undergoing processing before formal charges, as inquiries and operations to locate additional collaborators continue.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains dedicated to dismantling organized criminal networks involved in motor vehicle theft, livestock theft, and related offenses through sustained intelligence-based operations and close cooperation with community members across affected regions in Kenya.
According to DCI, detectives stated that the arrests represent a substantial advancement in efforts to suppress organized theft syndicates operating throughout the area. They noted that operations persist to identify additional suspects and dismantle the broader network believed to be facilitating the illicit trade.
