The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested an individual accused of masquerading as a commission investigator and attempting to extort money from a member of the public.
The suspect, who pretended to be an EACC officer, targeted the director of a company contracted by the Narok County Government.
EACC confirmed that the person falsely asserted the company was under corruption investigation and threatened further action unless a bribe was paid.
“The suspect approached the company director, claiming the firm faced a corruption probe,” the commission said.
He demanded Ksh2 million, promising to halt any further investigation if the payment was made.
The suspect then arranged a hotel meeting where he expected to receive part of the money, deepening the extortion scheme.
After the company director filed a complaint, EACC began surveillance.
The operation led to his arrest on Monday, June 22, while he was reportedly receiving Ksh200,000, a portion of the demanded bribe.
The suspect is currently processed at the Integrity Centre pending the investigation’s conclusion,” EACC added.
Investigators confirmed that he was not a commission employee, revealing his impersonation to defraud unsuspecting people.
EACC warned the public not to deal with individuals claiming to be investigators outside official procedures, emphasizing that all summonses are issued in writing and require attendance at its offices.
The commission reiterated that it does not host official meetings in hotels or solicit payments to influence investigations.
This arrest follows a series of anti-corruption actions by EACC, which recently apprehended individuals linked to tax assessments.
