Bribery Prevalence in Kenyan Public Services

Obtaining a birth certificate ranks as the most common public service where bribes are paid in Kenya, with 23.0% of survey respondents reporting this issue.

The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission Gender Survey 2025 reveals that other frequently cited services include release from jail or prison at 19.2%, medical interventions at 12.8%, and ID card applications at 12.3%.

Public utility services follow with a 10.0% rate of bribery. Lower on the top 10 list are passports at 4.9%, driving licenses at 3.8%, and school admissions at 2.9%.

Tax declarations and government job applications complete the ranking at 2.6% and 2.2%, respectively.
