Opposition Leaders Launch Campaign to End William Ruto’s Term in 2027

In a bold move on Kenya’s political turf, veteran politicians Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party, publicly declared their intention to unseat President Ruto in the upcoming 2027 general election. The duo kicked-off their opposition campaign during a rally in Ukambani, emphasising that the time has come for a change of government after what they described as failed and oppressive leadership.
The event was more than a mere announcement: it marked a clear strategic alliance between two former rivals. Kalonzo and Gachagua toured Machakos, Matuu and Mlolongo in late May, engaging supporters and underscoring their message that President Ruto should be a one-term occupant of
During their rallies, they criticised Ruto’s economic policy, alleged suppression of dissent and failure to deliver on promises to Kenyan workers and youth. Gachagua said a detailed plan to challenge the incumbent would be unveiled by December 2026, with Kalonzo playing a central role.
The announcement has provoked a strong reaction from both supporters and critics. For many in the opposition, the teaming up of Kalonzo and Gachagua signals renewed hope for political renewal and a more concerted strategy against the ruling coalition. However, allies of the presidency warn that the campaign may be premature and lacking in detail, pointing out that going beyond Ruto must go will require a compelling national agenda. Gachagua responded to President Ruto’s remarks on succession, emphasising that constitutional processes ensure power shifts even if the incumbent refuses to personally partake.
Looking ahead, the partnership between Kalonzo and Gachagua sets the stage for what could become one of Kenya’s most heated electoral contests. Their viewpoint suggests the build-up to 2027 will be defined not just by personalities but by competing visions for the country’s future. Whether their alliance can mobilise a broad base beyond Ukambani and Mount Kenya regions, and deliver a concrete policy platform, remains to be seen — yet their launch signals that the countdown to a possible change of government has already begun.
