Curfew Imposed in Njoro Amid Tribal Clashes That Left One Dead

by KenyaPolls

In a swift move to restore order, the Kenyan government has instituted a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the Mwisho wa Lami and Tipis areas of Njoro, Nakuru County, following violent tribal clashes that resulted in one fatality and several injuries. The clashes erupted late on August 31 when tensions between the communities escalated, leading to homes being torched and residents fleeing under threat. The curfew is part of a wider security crackdown aimed at halting further violence and displacement.
The unrest reportedly began with a protest over power outages, which devolved into confrontations along the Nakuru–Narok highway when motorists and youths clashed. The violence escalated into arson, as at least ten houses were razed overnight and scores of residents fled their homes in fear. One man was shot with an arrow and several others suffered serious cut wounds during the melee, sowing panic across the rural community.
Local authorities, including the Nakuru County Commissioner, have pledged enhanced patrols and urgent mediation efforts to quell the violence. Residents and civil society groups, however, warn that the curfew alone will not address the underlying grievances—namely, prolonged power outages, livestock theft accusations and social tensions between neighbouring communities. With displaced families now in need of assistance, humanitarian responses are being mobilised alongside security measures. Looking ahead, officials hope to restore peace and normalcy by repairing infrastructure, launching dialogue platforms, and ensuring no repeat of the crisis.
