The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has expanded its commitment to supporting former service members with the launch of the KDF Machakos Veterans Chapter during a regional outreach program held in Machakos County. The initiative was led by the Chairman of the KDF Military Veterans Advisory Committee, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, alongside Brigadier M. Leriari, the Director General of the Directorate of Military Veterans. The program aims to enhance the welfare of retired officers and service members by improving access to essential services, benefits, and psychosocial support, while also acknowledging the sacrifices veterans have made in safeguarding the nation.
The event drew together both retired and serving military personnel, marking a significant moment of unity and reflection for the defense community in the region. Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who graced the launch ceremony, emphasized her county’s commitment to ensuring former service members are not forgotten after their years of duty. The newly launched Machakos Veterans Chapter is expected to serve as a local coordinating hub where retired officers can network, register for benefits, receive updates, and access support programs tailored to their needs. The outreach also sought to create stronger bonds between the veterans and county leadership, reinforcing collaboration for long-term welfare.
Speaking during the ceremony, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Tumbo highlighted the importance of continuity in service beyond active duty, urging veterans to remain connected and informed. He noted that the establishment of organized chapters across counties is central to ensuring the government can effectively provide support. We have achieved this milestone through our collective efforts, cooperation, and unshakeable commitment to one another, he said, acknowledging the strong turnout and participation from the veterans community. He encouraged continued unity and collaboration to ensure no veteran is left behind.
The initiative signals a renewed focus on veteran affairs within Kenya’s defense framework, with more chapters expected across additional counties. Stakeholders view the Machakos launch as a meaningful step toward strengthening the support system for retired servicemen and women, many of whom face challenges transitioning into civilian life. The chapter is now expected to begin coordinating welfare activities and outreach programs, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and supportive veteran network in the region.
