Nandi partners with EPRA to unlock renewable energy opportunities

Nandi County has launched a strategic partnership with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to explore and invest in renewable energy projects across the region. The initiative aims to tap into the county’s abundant solar, wind, and small hydro-power resources, promoting sustainable development and expanding access to reliable power. Speaking during a consultative meeting, County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning, CPA Alfred Lagat, highlighted that the collaboration would boost local revenue, create jobs, and improve the overall economic well-being of residents. EPRA officials encouraged swift action to capitalize on Nandi’s natural resources, which provide a strong foundation for green energy ventures.

Nandi’s diverse terrain offers ideal conditions for renewable energy generation. Lowland areas in Aldai and Mosop are suitable for solar projects, while the elevated terrains of Tinderet and Nandi Hills provide strong wind energy potential. Additionally, rivers such as the Yala, Kipkaren, and Mogoon present opportunities for small-scale hydro-power development. Experts say that investing in these resources could ensure households and businesses access reliable, affordable electricity while attracting private investors interested in sustainable energy solutions. Local residents have welcomed the initiative, noting that improved power supply will facilitate entrepreneurship, reduce reliance on expensive fuel generators, and create opportunities for youth employment.

Looking ahead, the county envisions positioning itself as a regional hub for renewable energy, aligning with national and global climate action goals. Officials anticipate that tapping into Nandi’s clean energy potential will spur economic growth, support environmental conservation, and enhance living standards. By leveraging its natural advantages, Nandi aims to attract investors, expand access to electricity, and foster a green economy that benefits both local communities and broader development objectives.
